Company - A musical comedy

A musical by Stephen Sondheim with a book by George Furth.

NEW YORK – 1970. And it’s in the urgent pulse of this city - in the noise, the chaos, and the constant lack of time - that our story unfolds: the challenge of maintaining relationships in an increasingly depersonalised society.

Is it better to live single or in a relationship?
That’s the question Robert... or Bobby... asks himself at the surprise party thrown by his closest friends for his 50th birthday. Bobby has always been a solitary bachelor, surrounded by his “good and crazy” married friends — but he's never taken that final step. Fear of commitment? Fear of love? Is it too late to find happiness? Do we gain or lose when we choose to share life with someone? Do we stop being ourselves to become someone else? Does "I" become "we"? We can’t escape time, the passing years, or the sinking feeling that our self-imposed solitude is nothing but fear of commitment.

Through a series of dinners, first dates, deep conversations, drinks and other experiences, we witness a collection of comic and melancholic moments — with the couples closest to him, and with his three girlfriends. None of them understands why Bobby is still single. He weighs the pros and cons of settling down.

But do these encounters really happen, or are they just memories? A projection of his hopes, fears, frustrations...?
The fear of failure, of disappointment, the need to be loved, to belong to someone... All of this runs through Bobby’s mind — he just wants to live. Because life is worth living. And that only truly happens when there’s someone by our side to love. That’s what makes us feel alive.

Company premiered on Broadway in 1970 and, for 54 years, held the record for the most Tony Award nominations.

It has had numerous productions worldwide over the years, the most recent being the acclaimed Spanish version that ran for two years in Málaga, Madrid and Barcelona, directed and starred by Antonio Banderas.

This iconic musical now arrives in Portugal under the direction of Henrique Feist, with special permission from Music Theatre International.
